Bishwas by SRJAN

Indian Classical Dance (Odissi)

Choreographed by Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, Bishwas is an interplay of philosophical ideas, infused with images from Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism.

In order to evoke the feeling of freedom, of ecstatic surrender to the divine, the piece has drawn from the rich music and dance of the Sufi tradition in which, locked in union with the divine beloved, the devotees swirl in ceaseless concentric spins, praising god with uplifted arms, dancing to the emotive tune of a high-pitched, heart-felt musical entreaty. The choreography has thus been described as a “neo-classical innovation” in which various elements have been incorporated into the Odissi idiom.

Srjan, founded in 1993 by eminent Odissi guru, Sri Kelucharan Mohapatra, has evolved into a premier Odissi dance institution, nationally and internationally. After his demise, Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, his son and disciple, has striven to preserve his legacy in its pristine form and dynamic outreach. In the last 30 years of vigorous work and travel, Srjan has been able to establish a firm imprint of Odissi in the consciousness of many international audiences as well.
